Dane Gareis is a wealthy, reclusive young man with a traumatic past, but a spine of steel. When his father is killed in a mysterious plane crash, Dane carries on the family business and continues his passion for the very antiquity that got his father murdered — a golden sarcophagus belonging to an ancient cult known as the Ydrath. Soon, the Ydrath threaten him as well, and Dane seeks to hire a bodyguard he can trust. Someone who can protect him, and someone who will respect his boundaries. While he gets the first two, the third requirement falls apart when he hires Sean Harding. Sean Harding is an ex-detective with a sixth sense for danger. After his entire unit was murdered in a drug bust gone very wrong, he is a broken man who thinks only of revenge until he takes the job protecting the Gareis CEO. Sean’s attraction to the vulnerable Dane gives him new purpose, but his past is not escaped so easily, and his sixth sense tells him that there is more to the Ydrath than even Dane knows. This is the first book in a supernatural/paranormal mysteries series. A lot more to come, including a graphic novel!

I stumbled across this book by accident while on what started as a random yaoi manga search. And while I've typically sent only free software to my PC kindle, the preview of this book had me curious enough to make my first purchase.

Firstly, I must say I'm surprised at how the story grabbed and held my interest tightly from the start. The plot seemed interesting enough, though I admittedly had these overly contrived ideas of what the story would manifest into. That is, in a sense, a good and bad frame of thinking. To be totally honest, I did feel the story initially took the route I had anticipated, but not in the sense it became boring. Oh no, not in the least. The author's fluid writing played a part in this, because as I said I was hooked from the start. Because of my preconceived idea, the biggest shocker came when the story took a turn I wasn't expecting. The mystery behind everything taking place made it so I didn't want to stop reading. Then, I loved the character development. I love Dane's character, he wasn't at all how I predicted he would be. Don't get me wrong I love Sean, but it's written so I too wished to be Dane's bodyguard. I also feel the romance between the two is building at a decent pace. I would have been utterly turned off if they expressed love at first sight and jumped right into bed, particularly since they're both fighting their inner demons. Instant romances are too typical, especially in male/male works.

In all, I think this is a great first book in the series and was crushed the moment I realized I'd gotten to the end. I'm anticipating the next installment with much excitement. The mystery behind the Ydrath and the blooming romance between the main characters creates a wonderfully intriguing balance that will keep me coming back for more.

Tl;DR: I recommend this book.

I enjoyed this book. I thought that the writing was very fluid, and had me turning the pages quite quickly. The chemistry was palpable between the two main characters, and the book definitely leaves you wanting more since this is only book 1. I am definitely looking forward to reading book 2.
loved it
I really enjoyed reading this book. As soon as I finished I went on to purchase book 2, I needed to see how things played out between Sean and Dane......and find out what happens with the bad guys. I hope there will be more than 2 books in this series.....it was a nice read!
Fluid writing, believable characters and motivations, great worl-building, engaging and moving plot. There was a bit too much explicit sex for this to be a mainstream paranormal mystery, gay or straight, but I enjoyed it as a whole immensely. I can't wait for the next in the series.
A troubled pair that are just what each other needs to heal the scars of the past, while still embarking on what will undoubtedly prove to be the biggest adventure of their lives. There's just enough of a background and age gap between this OTP to accommodate fans' tastes as well that I would be surprised if any RR readers claim disappointment.
Pretty good book. I think the younger hero got over his aversion to touch pretty darn fast. It could have been interesting obstacle for the lovers, but it evaporates right away. Too bad. Still, I really like the bodyguard, and a few of his scenes have really stuck with me even though I read this book ages ago. Great writing and great story, I would definitely recommend this read. (But be warned---if you buy the first, you're gonna have to buy the rest!)
(there will be mild spoilers.)
one of the things that bugged me (personally) was the constant use of "the young man" and "the former detective" instead of the character's name or pronouns throughout the book. we know Dane is a young man, and Sean was a detective. it was weird to use in place of pronouns.

again, personally another thing was the fantasies from Dane and Sean towards the end of the story, namely Dane's. perhaps instead of "he would" in every single sentence, the fantasy should have been described as if it was happening to make it sound less awkward and put the reader in the experience. "would" prevents confusion that it was a fantasy, not real, but not changing the tenses would still be effective.

the description of Sean's Branish hallucinations (especially when he found his apartment's door open + his neighbor's sighting) had me worried for Sean. other various scenes also held my attention and made for interesting mysteries. while the frequent mentions and revisitations about Branish annoyed me a bit (i mean, he's already in the past) it did add some twist to Sean, i guess. the romance between the MCs were cute, even in just the one day they knew each other.
